What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin inflammation that can attack the face and eyes. It usually occurs after age 30. The symptoms of this annoying and possibly painful skin disease usually starts as face redness, swelling and tenderness of the affected area. Infected acne-like tender bumps is a part of this disease. Rosacea can be persistent for years and has episodes of increased symptoms followed by dormant periods of little to no symptoms. Episodes vary in length from patient to patient.
Ocular Rosacea
Ocular rosacea is a commonly misdiagnosed disease. Cases range from mild to severe with symptoms including soreness, the sensation of a foreign body present in the eye, burning, and watering eyes. Ocular rosacea occurs in 58% of patients who have skin symptoms of Rosacea.
Since symptoms are often misdiagnosed it is best to be evaluated by a physician to establish the proper treatment plan. Treatment can be as simple as artificial tears, proper eyelid hygiene to as complex as topical lid medication and oral antibiotics.
