GONORRHEA

What is Gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a common STD caused by a bacteria called N. Gonorrheae which has the tendency to attack the genital mucous membrane and also cause a systemic infection with skin manifestation.

What are the signs and symptoms of gonorrhea?

Someone infected with gonorrhea can be completely asymptomatic and not be aware of it. In other words: IT CAN BE A SILENT INFECTION!!!

A new onset of infection can be manifested with one or more of the following:

  • Burning and/or pain with urination

  • Discomfort with intercourse

  • Lower abdominal pain

  • Abnormal discharge from genitalia

  • Blood in urine

  • Discolored or cloudy urine

How long after sex with an infected individual may you show symptoms?

A few days to 1 week.

How can gonorrhea be diagnosed?

A urine or blood sample from a symptomatic infected individual can confirm the diagnosis of gonorrhea. A swab culture from genital discharge can also be obtained to confirm the diagnosis.

How long after testing will results be available?

There is quick, office base testing for STIs available but they are not as accurate as samples evaluated at a laboratory.

What happens if gonorrhea is not diagnosed and treated appropriately?

You can transfer the infection to your sex partner and either of you can have a serious systemic infection whenever your immunity is low. Systemic infections occur when this bacteria from the genital area enters the bloodstream and reaches the brain, skin and joints. Treatment of such an invasive infection can be tremendously complicated and difficult.

Is there any association between gonorrhea and chlamydia?

Yes. We treat for both at the same time.

How can I be treated for gonorrhea?

Treatment of gonorrhea can be easily accomplished with only one dosage of an antibiotic in the office.

What is my risk for other STDs if I’m infected with gonorrhea?

Dr. Rehman recommends that any patient with one STD be tested for the other common STDs as well. This provides patient and doctor peace of mind.
