Acne and You

Here are common questions about acne in general:
What is acne?
Acne is simply “clogged pores” with or without infection.
What are pores?
Pores are the opening of the hair follicle to the surface of the skin. Sweat and oil glands of the skin have an opening to the hair follicle. Hair follicle channels drain oil and sweat onto the surface of the skin.
How is acne formed?
Hormonal changes, especially during puberty, increase oil production, which, along with natural bacteria of the skin, can cause clogging of the hair follicle. This traps the normal bacteria of the skin in the hair follicle and causes acne pimples. In severe cases, when infection and inflammation of the hair follicle begins to invade deeper tissue of the skin, cystic acne is formed.

Dr. Habib ur Rehman is highly recommends beginning Proactive acne treatment as soon as possible to avoid frustration with acne scars. Mild, moderate, or even severe acne treatments are still more rewarding and less expensive than late acne scar treatment.
We advise you to treat your acne before you start developing scars.
How can be acne treated?
Acne treatment is a dynamic process that requires patience and consistency. Treatment can range from options as simple as proper skin care and cleanser, hormonal treatment, topical and/or oral antibiotics, injections of cystic acne, extraction with medical grade facial, unclogging and peeling of the skin through chemical peel or topical Vitamin A or a combination of these treatments. In cases of stubborn acne, resistant to alternative treatments, we offer “Accutane” (generic is called isotretinoin) which is a derivative of Vitamin A.
How fast can I see the results of acne treatment?
Acne does not clear overnight. On average, it takes six to eight weeks to see initial results. Set realistic expectations to avoid frustration and to give your acne treatment enough time to do its work. The best results occur after being on medication for at least three months. In most cases a combination therapy as suggested by Dr. Rehman can help to achieve result sooner.
